Get A Kit
A kit is the most basic step you can take to prepare for a disaster. You can build
one or
buy one, but you need to
get one. Getting a kit doesn’t have to be an overwhelming process. Chances are you
already have some of the items lying around your house. You just need to compile
everything together. You can also build your kit step-by-step, picking up a different
item each time you run to the store.
Your basic Disaster Supplies Kit should include:
- Water
- Food
- Flashlight(s) with extra batteries
- A family first aid kit
- Medications
- A radio with extra batteries
- Tools
- Clothing
- Personal items
- Sanitary supplies
- Money (cash)
- Contact information
- Pet supplies
- A map
The American Red Cross of Greater Indianapolis has a
detailed list of items that should be included in your kit.
Make sure your kit is in an easy-to-carry container with enough supplies to support your
entire household for three days. It is also recommended that you have more than three
days of supplies at home in case you are unable to leave for an extended period of time.
You may also consider getting a kit for your car. Don’t forget to check your kit(s) every
six months and rotate perishable items or restock as necessary.
